Luz Rivas, Founder and Executive Director
Luz Rivas founded DIY Girls in 2011. Like the majority of girls that participate in DIY Girls, Luz is a daughter of Mexican immigrants, was born and raised in Los Angeles, and is the first member of her family to attend college The programming of DIY Girls begins with 5th grade girls because that is the exact age when Luz had her first experience of working with and creating with technology.
Luz brings experience in engineering, STEM education and program management. She started her career as an Electrical Engineer for Motorola. After years of working in technology, she transitioned to STEM education and has worked at Caltech, Center for Children and Technology and Iridescent to design programs to attract more women and underrepresented minorities to STEM fields. She has presented at the American Society of Engineering Education, Engineers without Borders and SXSWedu.
Luz has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from MIT and a Masters in Technology in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
